Trump’s Heightened Attacks on the Media are an Affront to the First Amendment

Freedom of Press, in Particular, is Increasingly at Risk and Constantly in Danger

WASHINGTON —Freedom Forum Institute President and Chief Operating Officer, Gene Policinski, recently stated in an Inside the First Amendment column earlier this week, “The First Amendment was meant for times like now.”

Experts appointed by the UN and Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) are also champions of this view. David Kaye, UN special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, and Edison Lanza, IACHR special rapporteur for freedom of expression, issued a joint statement yesterday stating that Trump’s countless attacks on the media “are strategic, designed to undermine confidence in reporting and raise doubts about verifiable facts.”

They continued: “He has failed to show even once that specific reporting has been driven by any untoward motivations.” The Freedom Forum Institute along with its partner, the Newseum, continues to urge the importance of a free press and the First Amendment.

The experts maintained that Trump’s “attacks run counter to the country’s obligations to respect press freedom and international human rights law.” Today, it remains more critical than ever that the Freedom Forum Institute, along with the support of the Newseum as well as the Freedom Forum, its principle funder, persists in its mission to increase public understanding of this critical and core First Amendment freedom.
