The Freedom Forum Institute renamed its “Inside the First Amendment” column to “First Five” on March 14, positioning it under the same brand as its weekly podcast and newsletter. The column has since followed a weekly distribution schedule and features a rotation of expert columnists including Institute President Gene Policinski, First Amendment Center Executive Director Lata Nott and Religious Freedom Center Executive Director Kristen Farrington.
Today, the Institute announced that this engaging column will also include contributions by notable professionals in the field of education from the Institute’s education unit, NewseumED. These experts will periodically provide commentary on media literacy and the First Amendment, the rise of fake news and its impact on a free press, Free Speech Essentials resources and more.
NewseumED provides free, quality resources that learners of all ages need to cultivate an understanding of First Amendment freedoms and media literacy skills essential to civic life. It has a digital reach of more than 12 million teachers and students and presents free classes at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., and virtually for school groups.
Authors from the Newseum’s education team will include Anna Kassinger, director of curriculum; Kirsti Kenneth, curriculum developer; Katharine Kosin, museum educator; Barbara McCormack, vice president of education; Pierce McManus, digital communications and outreach director; and Barbara Pearson, outreach coordinator. Meet the complete NewseumED team.
NewseumED will debut its first contribution on Thursday, April 11, with a column on the challenges and opportunities of today’s media cycle co-authored by Kassinger and McCormack.
“We look forward to bringing our unique perspective and experience to First Five,” said McCormack, vice president of Newseum Education at the Freedom Forum Institute. “There’s never been a more important time to demonstrate how media literacy education can produce better consumers of news, a greater appreciation for the role a free press plays in our society and, most importantly, an empowered and engaged electorate.”
