The Freedom Forum Institute is pleased to announce that Wells Fargo, a multinational financial services company, has generously donated $15,000 to NewseumED, an education program that provides free, quality online resources to cultivate the skills to evaluate information from a variety of sources. NewseumED offers tools on fighting fake news and developing media literacy. This funding will aid NewseumED in furthering its critical work to extend media literacy education programming to students and educators across the country, as well as internationally. Since 2011, Wells Fargo has been a proud supporter of various NewseumED led education initiatives.
NewseumED reaches more than 11 million students each year through its online educational resources and welcomes more than 200,000 students who visit each year on-site at the Newseum. Its classes, workshops and resources — which feature artifacts from the Newseum’s own collection — explore history, media literacy and civics, and help students and educators better understand the five freedoms of the First Amendment.
Wells Fargo’s gift makes possible media literacy programming that will teach students how to analyze and evaluate content, while also instilling an understanding of why these skills are so important and necessary in the contemporary media landscape. In particular, this generous grant will fund two free media literacy workshops for teachers in Nov. 2018 and Feb. 2019.
Barbara McCormack, vice president of Newseum education, explains, “This generous gift enables us to give educators the quality resources they need to teach their students media literacy skills to combat misinformation, and to understand their important role in the information cycle. Exploring the complexities of how information is created, spread and consumed will help students spot problem stories and appreciate the importance of a well-informed citizenry.”
NewseumED’s media literacy classes will cover critical skills, including how to separate quality news sources from fake news and misinformation, how to gauge news sources’ credibility and authority, and how to distinguish between fact and opinion. At a time when numerous corporate and tech leaders have heightened their efforts to combat the spread of fake news, NewseumED’s important work is more relevant than ever. As we see more and more initiatives to reduce and regulate the sharing of fake and false information, spearheaded by social media outlets in particular, as well as several plans to support media literacy projects across the globe, it is clear that NewseumED’s offerings fill an increasingly important gap in education.
