The Price of Free Speech

By Mira Soni

In an interview with SiriusXM on Tuesday night, Representative Francis Rooney (R-FL) suggested that federal funding should be taken away from colleges and universities that “don’t believe enough in our Constitution.”

Rooney was speaking in reference to the events that took place at the University of California, Berkeley, earlier this year, when two controversial conservative pundits who were invited to speak at the school called off their appearances because of student protests. In February, President Donald Trump tweeted, “If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view – NO FEDERAL FUNDS?”

Rooney also suggested that there is a bill concerned with the issue of pulling federal funds from schools like Berkeley that do not sufficiently “defend” free speech.
