Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism ConferenceThe annual Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference starts on Saturday, June 18. The program, now in its 17th year, brings 51 rising high school seniors to Washington, D.C., for an all-expenses paid journalism conference at the Newseum.

Free Spirit alumni will be able to share their past experiences with this year’s class using the #freespirit16 hashtag on Twitter.

The conference will be highlighted by the Al Neuharth Award for Excellence in the Media dinner on June 21, where veteran ESPN sports broadcaster Chris Berman will receive the annual award. First presented in 1989, the award is named for USA TODAY and Freedom Forum founder Al Neuharth, South Dakota native and 1950 graduate of the University of South Dakota, co-presenter of the award. Online viewers will be able to watch the ceremony at newseum.org/live.
