Free Speech on Campus Conference

FSOC-news-story-30541 students from around the country participated April 2 in a “Free Speech on Campus” conference at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

The one-day conference, hosted by the Newseum Institute and co-sponsored by the Knight Foundation, allowed students and leading experts on the First Amendment to explore free speech issues on today’s college campuses through panels and roundtable discussions.

During the afternoon session, Newseum CEO Jeffrey Herbst asked students to talk about their personal experiences, many of which stemmed directly from unrest at the University of Missouri and Yale in 2015.

University of Missouri students Tim Tai and Mark Schierbecker participated in a panel discussion highlighting free speech debates nationwide. Their video of a Mizzou  professor requesting “muscle” to prevent them from filming a student protest made headlines around the world.

The conference was the first in a three-part funded by the Knight Foundation that will result in the booklet “Guide to Free Speech on Campus,” which will be published later this year.
